DUBAI, April 25, 2015 – Solitaire Gemmological Laboratories (SGL) held a seminar at VicenzaOro Dubai in which it discussed the challenges to the global industry of undisclosed synthetic diamonds.
SGL director Chirag Soni told the seminar on April 25 that SGL labs were now detecting an increasing incidence of CVD synthetics, noting risks that undisclosed synthetics could become a growing problem facing the industry.
It is hard to tell the difference between natural diamonds and CVD synthetics, with limited, and expensive, technology currently available to the industry, Soni said.
He said that he believed a hallmarking system was needed for diamonds, but specifications would have to be clearly defined and agreed by industry bodies.
Diamond industry leaders see no problems with full disclosure and branding of synthetic diamonds: the real concern is how to tackle the fraudulent practice of mixing undisclosed synthetics with genuine natural diamonds. www.vicenzaorodubai.com
