Master Cutler Kenneth Cooke visits Bailey of Sheffield

SHEFFIELD, October 2018 - Jewellery manufacturers Bailey of Sheffield, based at Portland Works in Sheffield, hosted the Master Cutler Kenneth Cooke and his wife Janet, in a tour of the Works, recognised as the birthplace and home of stainless steel manufacturing.

Ken began his career in engineering and manufacturing and during his tenure as Master Cutler has pushed for growth in manufacturing in the City region. His arrival at the works was timely as Ken toured the Bailey workshop and visited some of the talented local businesses that call Portland Works their home.

The Master and Mistress Cutler were shown around the Bailey workshop where founder Scott Bailey demonstrated how they design, manufacture and hand-build their designer jewellery using locally sourced marine grade 316L stainless steel.

Bailey of Sheffield have created a customisable modular range of marine grade 316L stainless steel jewellery.

The core principle of their debut range is the fusion of traditional jewellery techniques and the latest precision engineering.

Bailey of Sheffield say they are driven by a desire to produce jewellery of exceptional quality - all hand built in Britain, using UK materials. The steel they use is produced in Sheffield, and the select machinists, engravers and finishers are also all based in the city.

“It was nice to hear that Bailey have now sold to 29 countries around the world,” Ken said.

He was also given a tour of the Locksley Distilling unit, and shown how they produce their ground breaking gin.

As well as being shown the forge in action in the Wigful Tools unit, Ken was given a tour of the Stuart Mitchell Knives workshop, where he was shown how Stuart handcrafts his blades.

During Ken’s visit to the Works he was given a historical briefing by the volunteer group that maintains the buildings.

“At Bailey we had the opportunity to see the magnificent Bailey bracelets, both in design and engineering,” Ken said. “Likewise it is amazing to see Locksley Gin being produced alongside chisels, daggers, and wood turning tools.’’

Scott commented: ‘’We were thrilled to host Ken and Janet, and it was heartwarming to hear their tales of manufacturing in this great city.’’
