India’s Ganjam showcases jewels in London

LONDON, June 28, 2011 – Bangalore-based jeweller Ganjam, which is looking to break into the UK market, showcased its one-off pieces in 22-karat gold, diamonds, emeralds, rubies and platinum at the Platform gallery in the heart of London’s Hatton Garden diamond district.

Standout pieces, on display until June 29, included jewellery from the Heritage collection, inspired by Indian temples, said G.E. Kumar, director of Ganjam, jewellers since 1889.

The Padakam

The Heritage jewels are a tribute to the centuries-old style of South Indian craftsmanship, made with rare rubies, uncut diamonds, and set in 22-karat yellow gold.

“There is a lot of spirituality in these pieces,” Kumar said.

Another exceptional piece on show was the intricately linked Riverdance, depicting the confluence of rivers – a blend of platinum and diamonds, accentuated by blue-green tourmalines and aquamarines.

Riverdance has been displayed at jewellery shows around the world, Kumar said.

The Nizam Collection

Pieces from the Nizam collection, featuring rare emeralds and rubies, are Ganjam’s tribute to the grandeur and opulence of the Nizam Dynasty which ruled Hyderabad from 1724 to 1948.

Kumar said Ganjam, which is already available in top tier department stores in Japan, is now looking to penetrate the high end UK jewellery market.

Ganjam was a high-profile sponsor at a polo event in southern England on June 25, underscoring its conviction that upmarket UK consumers are a perfect fit for its jewellery.

Ganjam is renowned for the high quality of diamonds in its contemporary classic pieces, and for incorporating large and rare coloured stones that have been cut with precision in Idar-Oberstein, the German gemstone capital, Kumar said.
