Applications Now Open for Make Your Mark Awards 2017

June 2017 – Applications are now open for the second Goldsmiths’ Company Assay Office’s Make Your Mark Awards, which invites students and young designers to design a piece of jewellery or silverware that celebrates the London hallmark, the iconic Leopard’s Head.
Jewellery News

There are two Award categories to enter – Jewellery and Silversmithing – and the competition is open to current students, apprentices and recently graduated designers (within the last five years) of precious metal-related jewellery and silversmithing courses. Prizes will be awarded to the most artistically convincing design, model or finished piece in which precious metal is used with prominence, and where the London hallmark is an integral part of the design.

The winners will be revealed at an exclusive event at London’s Goldsmiths’ Hall on Tuesday 31st October 2017 during the two-day Make Your Mark event.

Dr Robert Organ, Deputy Warden of the Goldsmiths’ Company Assay Office, said of the launch: “The inaugural Awards saw some very thoughtful and imaginative designs and finished articles where the Hallmark was truly celebrated. The Awards showed clearly that the hallmark is not just a bedrock for consumer protection but a powerful marketing tool to promote branding and provenance. What’s more, the hallmark adds exciting design elements in its own right.
Jewellery News “This year is a great opportunity for applicants to Make their Mark again! The component marks within the hallmark can vary in size and placement – this offers tremendous creative and contemporary design possibilities. The judges want to be impressed again.

“Merging the 700-year-old hallmark with contemporary design reflects the Goldsmiths’ Company’s heritage of applying its proud traditions of the past into today’s modern trade.  The best of the past meets the best of today and the future.”

Last year’s winners were Roxanne Gilbert in the Jewellery category for her silver Five Facets ring, and Annabel Hood in the Silversmithing category for her beaker design, entitled London’s Leopard.
