Mixed results reported from BaselWorld show

BASEL, SWITZERLAND, April 1, 2009 [AFNS] – Buyers and exhibitors reported mixed results at the BaselWorld 2009 show, which began on March 26 and ends on April 2.
The show started slowly and some exhibitors said that although there were serious buyers, they were demanding large discounts.
In some cases, where sellers are under strong pressure to raise cash, low offers have been accepted. Larger firms, however, have been able to stand firm on prices. Many firms said they went into the show with low expectations due to the global economic slump.

Although there are fewer buyers than the record number who attended last year’s show, buyers are very selective and are visiting with a shopping list of specific items. Exhibitors and buyers reported a similar experience at the March Hong Kong Jewellery Show.
Organizers of the show said 1,952 exhibitors from 45 countries are participating, down from 2,087 last year.
