The international auction house Bonhams has announced the appointment of Stewart Young as Director of Jewellery and Head of Jewellery Asia, effective immediately.
Based in Hong Kong, Stewart will manage Bonhams’ Jewellery Department in Asia, including business getting, selling strategies and operations.
He will also work with the wider global jewellery team on promoting all sales within the region. Initially, Stewart will work alongside Leslie Roskind who, after two highly successful years of leading the jewellery department, will be taking up a new post with Bonhams in her native New York in the summer.
Stewart brings to Bonhams over 10 years of experience in the auction industry, first as Deputy Director, Specialist at Sotheby’s and then as Director of Jewellery at Tiancheng International Auctioneer, before pursuing his passion in design as an independent jeweller.
For more than a decade prior to his involvement in the jewellery market, Stewart had already established an international track record in costume design for film, stage and TV productions alike. Raised in Hong Kong and Canada, Stewart speaks fluent Cantonese, Mandarin and English, and is a GIA-certified graduate gemologist.
Jean Ghika, Bonhams Global Head of Jewellery, said: “We welcome Stewart into our global team of jewellery specialists. He has a passion for the jewellery business, and his leadership experience combined with an in-depth knowledge of current trends will bring added strength in driving growth to this significant market.”
Malcolm Barber, Bonhams CEO Asia, commented: “It is with great pleasure that we welcome Stewart to Bonhams Asia. His wealth of experience will be invaluable as we continue to enhance our expertise and sourcing capabilities in the region.”
Stewart Young, Bonhams Director of Jewellery and Head of Jewellery, Asia, said: “I’m delighted to join Bonhams at this exciting time of its long history. The jewellery department has an enviable reputation, and I am looking forward to adding my knowledge and enthusiasm to what is already a very strong team.”
The next Hong Kong Jewels and Jadeite sale will take place on 22 June this year.
