Christie’s, taking a proactive approach to the lockdown, staged a zoominar to raise awareness of Art Nouveau jewellery, joined by senior jewellery editors.

Jewellery specialist Marie-Cecile Cisamolo talked about the top designers, such as Rene Lalique, of the brief Art Nouveau period, which ran for a little over a decade until the First World War.

Marie-Cecile said Art Nouveau pieces, characterised by graceful lines and a love of nature, will struggle to compete with the high prices achieved by magnificent items of Art Deco jewellery in the auctions market, as the most exquisite Art Deco items were more likely to feature exceptional gemstones and precious materials.

She talked about one of the most successful auctions of Art Nouveau jewellery, the Christie’s Beyond Boundaries sale in Geneva in November 2017, which garnered extraordinary prices for the consigned items.
