LONDON – Italian coral expert Vincenzo Liverino has authored a new book about Sciacca coral, published by Bangkok-based gemstone lab and educational group AIGS.
Sciacca coral is a rare Mediterranean red coral found in the 19th century near Sciacca, Sicily, and is celebrated for its fiery orange, salmon, and yellow hues, often featuring brownish spots from volcanic activity.
This “volcanic” coral was formed over centuries, with deposits created by underwater eruptions and geological shifts, making it highly prized for antique jewellery.
The book relates the history of Sciacca coral and its use in jewellery.
“For centuries, corals have captivated naturalists, divers, scientists, and artists alike,” says gemstone authority Henry Ho in a foreword to the book.
“Yet few have dedicated themselves as wholeheartedly to understanding, preserving, and honouring these natural treasures as Vincenzo Liverino.”
