GEM DEALER PROFILE – Myint-Myint Thein boosts private client trade in antique and vintage jewels
By David Brough
LONDON, December 2019 – Ms Myint-Myint Thein is highly qualified as a gem and jewellery dealer and valuer and is looking to develop business opportunities with private clients, notably in antique and vintage pieces.
Myint-Myint, known as MiMi, fell in love with jewellery as a child in Myanmar, playing with her mother’s collection, which included pieces set with jade and rubies.
As she grew up, she maintained her fascination with gems and jewellery and ran a jewellery counter in Yangon’s gem museum while learning gemmology from a licensed teacher.
As a young woman, she came to London and qualified as a gemmologist and in diamonds with the Gemmological Association of Great Britain (Gem-A), gained a diploma in jewellery valuation with the National Association of Jewellers (NAJ), and developed an interest in antique jewellery.
Now settled in London, MiMi is looking to extend her private client base with whom she can buy and sell gemstones and jewellery, notably antique and vintage items.
She is an expert in natural Mogok rubies and jade, and has conducted valuations of exceptional rubies for top international clients, including royalty and several high jewellers.
MiMi deals in rubies and sapphires, jade, diamonds and pearls, as well as precious jewellery and scrap gold.
“I have a long experience in trading and valuing gems and jewellery in the UK, as well as at auctions, and am now looking to increase my network of contacts among private clients, especially in antique and vintage pieces,” she said.
MiMi sees a long term trend for rising prices in unheated rubies and Kashmir sapphires due to a combination of tight supplies and rising global demand.
She is a member of the London Diamond Bourse, and the Society of Jewellery Historians.
