Sotheby’s to auction jewels belonging to Gina Lollobrigida
GENEVA, May 2013 – On 14 May 2013, Sotheby’s Geneva auction of Magnificent Jewels and Noble Jewels will present over 650 lots, led by a group of 23 outstanding pieces from the collection of international screen legend Gina Lollobrigida.
Many of these jewels are seminal Bulgari pieces which accompanied the iconic actress at landmark moments of her career.
Also taking centre stage this spring will be a remarkable selection of gems of aristocratic provenance and great historical significance, such as a 74.53 carat fancy yellow diamond which belonged to Ahmed Shah Qajar – Shah of Persia from 1909 to 1925 and the last ruler of the Qajar dynasty.
In addition to exceptional gemstones, diamonds and signed jewels, the sale will feature a collection of 34 jewels designed by Suzanne Belperron – the most talented and influential female jeweller of the 20th century – for her long-standing friend Cécyle Simon.
David Bennett, Chairman of Sotheby’s Switzerland and Chairman of the Jewellery Department for Europe and the Middle East, said: “It is an immense privilege for Sotheby’s to handle the sale of these magnificent jewels from the Collection of Gina Lollobrigida.
“Not only are they evocative of an extraordinary woman and one of the greatest stars of the 20th century, but they are among the finest designs created by Bulgari in the 1950s and 1960s.
