LEICESTER, UK – Food, fashion and jewellery are linked in Diwali celebrations through the core themes of prosperity, abundance, and spiritual renewal.
This is highlighted along the Golden Mile in Leicester, packed with jewellers, fashion shops and restaurants, a vital part of the celebration of the Festival of Lights.
Leicester’s Golden Mile hosts one of the biggest Diwali celebrations outside India.
In 2026 Diwali day, the main day of lights, takes place on November 8.
As people shop for the latest fashions and jewellery before and during the Five Days of Diwali, in anticipation of their visits to the homes of friends and family, they may stop for a vegetarian meal at Bobby’s, or at Mirch Masala, and savour a selection of dishes featuring rice, dal, chickpeas and paneer.

In the days running up to Diwali day, fashion aficionados visit high-end Asian couture and bridal fashion boutiques, such as Arinder Bhullar, Ladlee, and Bajaj, to try on the latest saris and outfits, perhaps featuring two-tone silk with hand embroidery.

Wearing jewellery is very much a part of the Diwali celebrations. A married woman could wear a contemporary mangalsutra, a sacred necklace, made from white gold with black beads by Golden Mile jeweller Vishal Jogiya, while enjoying South Asian food delicacies at Mirch Masala.

Families and friends mill around the Golden Mile on Diwali day as darkness descends, wishing each other “Happy Diwali” as the celebrations accelerate into a crescendo, with the crowd crammed into Belgrave Road amidst a barrage of colourful firecrackers by mid-evening.
Jewellers are festooned with colourful decorations, the streets are brightly lit up as night falls, families pack into the eateries, and men dance in the streets as the celebrations reach their peak.
